Who We Are

Created by state law on April 13, 1951 and officially founded on August 11, 1954, the Dramatic and Musical Conservatory “Dr. Carlos de Campos” de Tatuí – or just Conservatório de Tatuí, as it is known internationally – represents one of the most serious and successful actions in the cultural sector in the State of São Paulo.

With 70 years of training and cultural dissemination, one of the most respected music schools in Latin America fulfills the mission of training instrumentalists, singers, actors/actresses and luthiers of international prestige. Its more than 70 different regular courses, all free, have an average duration of seven years and its students always stand out in national and international competitions. Some of today’s leading musicians were trained at the Tatuí Conservatory.

The institution is located 130km from the capital of São Paulo and receives students from all over Brazil and also from several countries abroad. Many foreigners seek out the Tautí Conservatory to improve their skills in Brazilian music.

In addition to maintaining complete infrastructure – classrooms, auditoriums, theater, musical instruments, collection of costumes and accommodation – the Tatuí Conservatory maintains an up-to-date and excellent teaching program. Another opportunity offered to students at the institution are scholarships. Currently, there are three types of scholarships – aid, craft and performance – which pay and offer students better conditions to dedicate themselves exclusively to studying, in addition to the opportunity to work alongside professional musicians and artists.

The Tatuí Conservatory also has Pedagogical Groups and Artistic Groups. There are around 50 ensembles, with the most varied formations – orchestras, bands, big bands, cameratas, theater groups, etc. – through which students are assured of a broad cultural experience, stage experience and contact with professional instrumentalists.

In addition to excellent teaching, the Tatuí Conservatory maintains an artistic calendar with different activities, which receives spectators from all over the interior of São Paulo. There are shows, meetings, festivals, master classes, workshops, concerts, theater shows, intensive courses, lectures and recitals. Regularly, internal production is taken outside the walls, with performances by musical and theatrical groups in different parts of the State of São Paulo.

Due to its importance on the international music scene, the Tatuí Conservatory contributed in an essential way to the municipality, its headquarters city, earning the title of “Capital of Music”. The title was granted to the municipality through state law 12,544, of January 30, 2007, which makes Tatuí official as the “Music Capital of the State of São Paulo”.

History

The selection of Tatuí to host the first music school maintained by the Government of the State of São Paulo in the 1950s was not by chance. The city, located 131 km from the capital, had a strong musical tradition, particularly represented by music bands, which were a prominent presence throughout the state’s interior.

In the early decades of the 20th century, Tatuí experienced a surge in economic development linked to textile manufacturing. The city received new residents from various parts of the state, and the entire social life, including musical activities, was enhanced.

From that era, notable musical personalities emerged, such as the violinist Otávio “Bimbo” de Azevedo and the cellist João Del Fiol, who was his student. Together, they played in silent film orchestras and were part of one of the most appreciated jazz bands in the region in the 1920s. Del Fiol also performed in churches, taught violin, tuned pianos, and worked as a storekeeper at the “Salles Gomes” state technical school. A well-remembered figure in the city, he played a fundamental role in the founding of the Conservatory.

It is said that in 1950, Deputy Narciso Pieroni was impressed by a performance of João Del Fiol’s ensemble, and Del Fiol made the politician promise to establish the first public music school in Tatuí. That same night, a group of intellectuals drafted the project outline at the bar of the Hotel Del Fiol. The idea was for it to follow the model of the Conservatório Dramático e Musical de São Paulo and the National School of Music in Rio de Janeiro.

The creation of the school was proposed in the Legislative Assembly in December 1950 and was sanctioned by then-Governor Lucas Nogueira Garcez (1951-1955) in April 1951.

The first temporary address of the Conservatory of Tatuí was a residence located at the corner of Humaitá Street and José Bonifácio Street. The first registrations in April 1954 attracted 331 candidates in just five days. All were residents of Tatuí, which then had 30,000 inhabitants. Of those registered, 30 began courses, which included singing, piano, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, and similar instruments (i.e., other wind instruments) and guitar, as well as theoretical subjects such as harmony, counterpoint and fugue, music history, music pedagogy, harmonic analysis and composition, folklore, and dramatic art.

The first director of the school was Eulico Mascarenhas de Queiroz, who worked as a music editor at the São Paulo Municipal Theater. Among the musicians he brought to teach at the Conservatory was the flutist Spartacco Rossi, a composer and arranger who played a significant role in the early years of the institution, forming the first orchestra and promoting performances throughout the city. Under his baton, the newly created Amateur Symphony Orchestra performed the operas “Juca Pirama” (by Father Antonio Massana) and “O Guarani” by Carlos Gomes. Rossi continued his intense involvement with the institution until his retirement in 1970.

After Eulico Queiroz left in 1959, the school was successively directed by Altino Santarém, Yollanda Rigonelli, and Djalma de Carvalho Moreira.

In 1968, there were 250 students enrolled at the Conservatory of Tatuí, a number already excessive for the original facilities. In the same year, José Coelho de Almeida, a flute professor and conductor, took over the direction of the Conservatory. On April 24, 1969, the building where the City Council and Municipal Library were located was ceded to the Conservatory at its current address—415 São Bento Street. With the new building, the institution doubled its number of students, reaching 600.

The title of “largest music school in Latin America” emerged in 1976 when the Conservatory of Tatuí received a significant contribution from businessman José Mindlin. The businessman donated a large number of instruments to the school, earning it the title of “largest in Latin America” at that time. Another important donation occurred in 1981 when businessman Wanderley Bocchi provided an extensive plot of land where the school’s accommodations are now built.

When José Coelho de Almeida left the position, Hans Joachin Koellreutter, already renowned throughout Brazil as a teacher and musical personality, took over the direction. At the beginning of 1984, Koellreutter was succeeded by conductor Antonio Carlos Neves Campos, who remained at the helm of the institution until 2008.

In 2006, the administration of the Conservatory of Tatuí ceased to be directly subordinate to the State and began to be managed by a Cultural Social Organization (OS). The Associação de Amigos do Conservatório de Tatuí (AACT) originated from the school’s Parents and Teachers Association (APM), created in 1981. In the year the State Department of Culture decided to change the school’s management model, it opted to accredit the APM as an OS. It modified its statute and created a council, transforming into the AACT.

The year 2006 also marked the inauguration of a branch of the Conservatory of Tatuí in São José do Rio Pardo, a city located to the north of the state with about 50,000 inhabitants.

In 2008, the Board of Directors of the Social Organization approved the name of Henrique Autran Dourado to become the new executive director, leading a new management team of the Associação de Amigos do Conservatório de Tatuí. The hiring of professionals began to be done under the CLT regime, there was a restructuring of the scholarship system, the formation of new pedagogical and pedagogical-artistic groups, and the reorganization of physical spaces for each area and/or course.

In 2012, the Government of São Paulo granted the Conservatory of Tatuí a new building, located at 808 São Bento Street, where the old municipal forum was located. In 2014, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Conservatory of Tatuí, the institution organized a wide series of concerts, shows, performances, competitions, and operas. It also implemented the Programa de Bandas Coreto Paulista, meetings, and International Festivals for all areas of the school’s activities. On January 18, 2018, the administration was transferred to Abaçaí Cultura e Arte, with Ary Araújo Júnior as the executive director.

Currently, the Conservatory of Tatuí is managed by Sustenidos Organização de Cultura. The board is composed of Alessandra Costa (Executive Director), Rafael Salim Balassiano (Administrative Financial Director), and Claudia Freixedas (Educational Superintendent). General Manager of the Conservatory of Tatuí: Gildemar Oliveira.
